The Belliphonic Mind
Flo Huth & Mikel R. Nieto
Information
A sound investigation into the acoustic memory of armed conflicts. Mannheim-based musician Flo Huth has examined interviews, news reports and documentary platforms in order to identify sonic associations with military violence. To which sounds does the attribute "war" adhere? Based on the term "Belliphon", which combines the Latin word "Bellum" (war) with the Greek "Phon" (voice), the sound of conflicts — from actual battles to everyday noises and artistic expressions in pop culture and the media — emerges as an audible world of its own. Together with musicians/sound artists Kasia Kadlubowska, Zoé Pouri and Joss Turnbull, Flo Huth and Mikel R Nieto attempt to develop a dialogue from the collected materials and improvisational approaches that address the subject from the perspective of memory and the immediacy of experience.
